2025 ASSOCIATE ATTORNEY POSITION

Kaufman Lieb Lebowitz & Frick LLP is seeking to hire a full-time associate to join our team as soon as possible. We are looking for a bright, passionate advocate with litigation experience, a commitment to civil rights, and an outstanding academic record to join our growing firm. 

About Us:

Our firm is a justice-oriented litigation boutique with a focus on civil rights, including police misconduct and excessive force, employment and housing discrimination, prisoners' rights, First Amendment rights, and wrongful conviction. We are a small, collaborative firm. We aspire to work nimbly, creatively, and without unnecessary hierarchy or formality. We find fulfillment in applying our skills and experience to seek accountability for law enforcement and government abuses, combat structural racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, and ableism, and advocate for clients who face injustice at the hands of more powerful parties.

Required Experience and Skills:

  1. Demonstrated interest and/or experience in one or more areas of civil rights law, such as Section 1983 or anti-discrimination laws.

  2. 1-5 years of experience as a practicing attorney working in litigation and/or as a law clerk. Current law students will not be considered. 

  3. Litigation experience, including drafting substantive motions and engaging in discovery practice.

  4. Superior research and writing skills.

  5. Ability to efficiently manage time and a busy caseload.

  6. Solid interpersonal and communication skills and a desire to directly interact with clients.

  7. Must be admitted to the NY Bar.

  8. While not required, clerkship experience and Spanish language skills are highly preferred.

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Manage and litigate civil rights and commercial cases from inception through trial, including legal research, motion practice, and discovery.

  2. Analyze and evaluate new cases for representation.

  3. Engage in high-stakes negotiations, mediations, and other pre-litigation advocacy.

In-Office Requirements:

Our firm prioritizes in-person work and collaboration, while also providing flexibility to our employees. Associates are required to be in-person at our midtown New York office on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and at least one other day of their choosing. Associates have the option to work remotely on other days, subject to their workload and case requirements.

Salary:

$90K-$110K per year depending on level of experience, plus a discretionary bonus. Other benefits include participation in the firm’s 401(k) plan, health insurance, and paid time off.

What you’ll do every day:

  • Provide high quality legal support on litigations and pre-litigation representations

  • Request, collect, and organize public records, medical records, criminal records, and other investigatory materials 

  • Maintain litigation docket and case calendars, including dates for court appearances, motions, and other important deadlines

  • Assist attorneys in preparing for meetings, hearings, depositions, mediations, and trials

  • Organize case electronic case files, publicly filed documents, discovery documents, client documents, and other records

  • Communicate regularly with clients concerning document collection, meetings, and case developments

  • Participate and take notes during client and witness interviews

  • Electronically file documents with state and federal courts and agencies

  • Proofread and cite check court briefs and other documents, and ensure compliance with applicable local rules

  • Format court briefs and other documents and create Tables of Contents and Tables of Authorities

Your pay and benefits: 

Salary of $55K-70K per year depending on level of experience, plus a discretionary bonus. Other benefits include:

Where and when you’ll work: 

You’ll work in our office in midtown, New York City. The general hours of work are 9:30AM to 5:30PM Monday through Friday. You’ll be required to work in the office Monday through Thursday, with the option to work remotely on Friday. Some overtime work may be necessary.
